A Word From Carl Taylor

Working in the "Music City" has some wonderful advantages. Beautiful scenery, friendly people, a fairly stable economy and more music and music related businesses and people than you can imagine. When I first moved here, I remember the wonderment of being around so much talent and so many people that earned a living in businesses that were related to mine. Now 16 years later I've found that the J-O-B of it and the fog of "cool" has crept in and dulled the wonderment that had previously been mine. I'll loosely define this "cool" as that distant-detached-muted but seemingly hip (acceptable) appearance and behavior. If you look around, it's not unique to the music business because all of us have been dulled down in some way. It's surprising though because we're not dutifully making widgets for a living. It has to be something else.

Sure, business is hard and the recent economic crisis has brought severe pressure to just survive. Competition is fierce, hard decisions have to be made and strong leadership is needed all the more. Surprisingly though, the "cool" in life is trickier to get a handle on. It blows in when we least expect it, slowly, silently choking out the thrill of living from our whole hearts and the outward expression of who we really are.

This past weekend I traveled to Indy to see both the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) and The Amy Grant-Michael W. Smith 2-Friends Tour. One had 25,000 teens in a stadium and the other was in a more intimate theatre setting. Surely these events would pierce the fog. Having worked with these clients for many years, I know the artists, musicians, and crew quite well. I know that each of them bring a deep passion, commitment and skill to what they do. But when we're together, it wouldn't be "cool" to express what we really feel (joy?), so we bring our best "just doing my job" face. Even as an audience member, am I allowing myself to experience the transcendence of the moment or does my professionalism hold me in check? How would I be judged if I really let out the enthusiasm, joy, tears, excitement, fear, compassion and whatever else was inside? What if I'm so dulled that I've lost the awareness of my own trueness?

After these events and a time of reflection, I want to throw away the reserved "cool", peel back the fog of life and allow the thrill and wonderment back in. Soak up all the beauty that is music, art and connection with others and remember for a moment, who we really are, what matters and passionately come alive. I know this; that's not "coolness", but it most certainly is "cool". G. K. Chesterton once said that, "gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder". When we let that wonderment touch our hearts again, real gratitude pours out and the shimmering self is free again.

2 Friends Tour with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith

Multi-platinum recording artists Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith teamed up this Spring and Fall for a multi-city U.S. tour that reunited the two iconic singer/songwriters for the first time on the road together since the early 90's. CTS Audio provided audio production for this landmark tour. To ensure that fans in every seat were able to thoroughly enjoy this reunion of talent, CTS Audio flew (24) JBL VerTec 4888s and (12) of the new JBL VerTec 4886s for front and center fill. The system was powered by (20) I-Tech HD 12000 amplifiers. One of the exciting aspects in the production of the tour was the fusion of the crew. Amy's long time engineer, Russ Long, selected a Digidesign Profile Console for FOH and Michael's monitor engineer, Matt Manix worked on a Yamaha PM5D while Dave McMullin from CTS served as Assistant Tech. The mix of talent on and off stage created fantastic shows each and every night.

The tour also showcased some of the latest in audio technology. The CTS team beta-tested the Performance Manager by System Architecture, representing the first audio company to do so. In addition the audio crew applied the brand new Version 5 Tunings software (provided by Harman) to monitor and adjust the individual zones within the array.

Installation at The People's Church, Spring Hill Campus

Choosing to renovate a vacated Kroger grocery store in Spring Hill, TN, The People's Church (a prominent Southern Baptist Congregation and Willow Creek Association Member led by Senior Pastor Rick White) asked CTS Audio to create a state-of-the-art audio, video and lighting system in their new worship center in addition to a video camera package at the main Franklin campus. The Spring Hill campus is the first plant for The People's Church and is led by campus pastor, Brandon Porter.

The Sunday message is delivered via video recorded at the 9:00 am service at the Franklin Campus and then played back at 11:00am for the Spring Hill congregation. Since the video playback is such a critical part of the service for the new campus, CTS installed a Christie WU12K-M 10,000 lumen 1920x1200 DLP projector to vividly display a life size HD image of the Pastor on the 20' screen. Additional screens flank the stage for PowerPoint, I-Mag and lyrics. The sermon video playback is transported using a Fast Forward Video(FFV) Micron HD Hard Drive Recorder/Player. To ensure HD quality when recording the sermon, a Panasonic AG HPX370 Camera was integrated into the video system at the main Franklin campus.

With a capacity of over 1000 seats, CTS Audio outfitted the worship center with NEXO GEO S12 line arrays and NEXO RS15 subwoofers. The sub-woofers are arrayed in a cardioid configuration using CTS's bass steering technology. Utilizing the church's existing Aviom system, the CTS install team set up a monitoring package integrating Shure wireless mics and Sennheiser IEM's. In addition, CTS installed a theatrical lighting system with Jands console. A Crestron Control system was set up to control the lighting, projector system and screens via an iPad station.

When asked about the installation, Brandon Porter commented, "We are extremely pleased and blessed to have worked with CTS Audio. They bent over backwards to work with us through every step of our process. We feel confident that we have absolutely the best audio-video system and installation for the absolute best price that we could have possibly gotten. On top of all of that, we really like these guys! We would definitely work with them again."
